My Package Was Misdelivered! Why Did It Happen and What Should I Do?

In the world of logistics, a misdelivered package is not a common incident, but it might happen every once in a while. There are times that the courier company might deliver a package to another address than what is written on the shipping label but, there are also times that you wrote wrong information on the shipping label. What do to in such cases?

What if my package was delivered to the wrong address?

  • You have just recently changed your address and you did not notify the courier company handling the delivery? Then your package is most likely delivered to your old address. Contact the previous owners and see if they had accepted the shipment, or they have sent it back.
  • If you have not changed the address, and yet the tracking status tells your package was delivered, you should contact the courier company. The package might have been misdelivered to another location, or by an honest miswritten information on the shipping label.
  • Ask your neighbours – if you are working or were out of the house at the delivery time, the neighbour could have taken the liberty of signing the package as received on your behalf. Keep in mind that this is not always the best case, as if that the parcel arrives damaged, and your neighbours signed already, the claim process would be rather harder.

Such cases have happened with courier companies like FedEx, UPS, DHL or other, and in some cases, the courier driver cannot see the house indicated house number. So, we suggest if you have a small plate on your door/house, to place a more visible and larger one. This way you will ensure that your package will not be misdelivered to another address in the neighbourhood.

Reasons for a misdelivered package?

If you are expecting a letter or a package but you have still not received it for some time now, this can be a case of misdelivery. There are several situations to understand why this happened:

  • The tracking status says delivered, and you did not accept the package. Occasionally, for some reason, packages might be marked by the courier as “delivered” even before his actual arrival. The carrier could eventually show up later, even though the tracking system indicates something different.
  • Have you tried changing the address, after the order was placed? Sometimes it takes longer than expected for the courier to inform the assigned courier about the changes and re-route the package. Another situation is that if you change the delivery address once the package is on its way, then most likely the package will be delivered to another address.

Nonetheless, if the package can’t be located within a few days and the courier company declares it as being lost, you are entitled to take any action and file a claim to get a refund for the losses.

You should ask the courier company to contact the sender of the package and try to re-send it to the right recipient.

Can you keep a package that was mistakenly delivered to you?

We don’t advise you to keep any package before trying to put the things back on track. When the courier companies are alerted by the sender or the right receiver of the package that the shipment was not delivered to the right address, they will dig deeper into the case. They will go down the line to find where the shipment is located. They might show up at your door to ask for the package and it shouldn’t come to you as a surprise. Therefore, we strongly advise you not to try to keep any packages that weren’t intended to be shipped to you.
