How long does Australia Post take to deliver?

Australia Post offers mail and parcel delivery services, with different transit times for shipments sent within the same state or to a different state. Australia Post delivery times within Australia will depend on where in each state/territory the item is being posted from/to, and the level of congestion in their delivery network at the time of posting.

For international shipments to the UK and the USA, the Australia Post delivery time is 10-15 days for standard parcels and 2-4 for urgent shipments. In practice, this estimation may vary depending on international customs procedures.

For non-urgent shipments to the UK and the USA, Auspost also offers economy solutions with long transit times that depend on whether you choose their air or sea transport options. Air transport takes over 20 days, while sea transport takes 2-3 months.

Australia Post pick-up and drop-off points

As well as their traditional Post Office branches, Auspost has an optional service called MyPost where you can create a free account and manage your pick-up and drop-off options easily.

Choose between the following options for your Australia Post parcel collection and deliveries:

  • Post Office – you can pick up and drop off parcels at one of the 3,600 Post Offices located nationwide. Auspost offers flexible pick-up options and timeframes through their Parcel Collect service. Create a MyPost account and choose a Post Office as your Parcel Collect location. You will get email and SMS notifications when your parcel is ready for collection. Parcel Collect is only available for shipments sent with Australia Post or StarTrack.
  • PO box – a PO Box costs $20 to set up, with annual charges depending on the PO Box size. You can apply online with MyPost or in-store. The PO box can be accessed any time, allowing you to collect letters and parcels at your convenience or store them securely for up to 30 days. You can choose to be notified by email when a delivery arrives to your PO Box. Another benefit of shipping to a PO box is that you protect your privacy by not revealing your home address.
  • 24/7 Parcel Locker – you can send prepaid parcels under 16 kg with Auspost whenever suits you with an easy-to-use Parcel Locker. They are found in over 1,000 locations nationwide, including at railway stations, petrol stations, 7-Eleven stores and Woolworths stores. Register with MyPost and add a Parcel Locker as an alternative address. Once you have your account, you will also be able to send parcels with Auspost from any Parcel Locker you wish.

Does Auspost deliver parcels on Saturdays or weekends in general?
Saturday delivery is only available if you post your item on Friday to an address within the same state with their Express Post Saturday Delivery service. Saturday deliveries are generally made between 9 am and 1 pm.
This service can be added to almost all Express Post deliveries at no extra cost. Australia Post does not deliver parcels on Sundays except during rare cases such as busy holiday times, and they do not deliver on public holidays.
How long does standard Australia Post take?
Australia Post delivery times for standard letter and parcel shipments depends on whether the item is sent locally, nationally or overseas:
Same state: Up to 4 working days for letters and up to 8 days for parcels (depending on distance).
Interstate: 3-6 working days for letters and 3-13 working days for parcels (depending on distance).
International: Auspost standard letter and parcel delivery times vary greatly depending on the destination. For the most popular overseas shipping destinations of UK and USA, Australia Post standard delivery usually takes 10-15 working days.
How do I use a parcel locker for Australia Post deliveries?
To get Australia Post parcel deliveries sent to a Parcel Locker, you will first need to create a free MyPost account or log in to your existing account. Then follow the steps below:
  • Go to "Alternative delivery addresses" and add a Parcel Locker.

You will receive an SMS or email when your parcel arrives at your chosen Parcel Locker.

Can someone else pick up my parcel from Auspost? How do I authorise it?
If you cannot collect your Auspost parcel from the Post Office in person, you can nominate someone to collect it for you.
Choose one of the following options:
  • Send someone who lives with you and has ID with your same address.
  • Complete the "collection authorisation" section on your notification card and have the person take it to the Post Office, along with their ID.
  • Complete a letter of authority for the person to print and present at the Post Office, along with their ID.
How much does it cost to ship a package locally or overseas with Australia Post?
The Australia Post parcel rates will depend on the size of your shipment and on the service you choose. Auspost offers flat rates from $9.30 to $26.20 for parcels of up to 5 kg sent within Australia.
For information about other postage rates and international shipping rates offered by Australia Post, you will have to check their website.

Depending on whether you are shipping domestically or internationally, Australia Post imposes the following limits:
Domestic parcels: The weight limit is 22 kg, while the maximum length and dimensions are 105 cm² and 0.25 cubic metres respectively.
International parcels: The weight limit is 20 kg, while the maximum length and dimensions are 105 cm² and 140 cm girth respectively.
How do I address a shipment to a Parcel Collect address?
Your Parcel Collect address must include your name, 10-digit APCN (Australia Post Customer Number) and the address of your chosen Post Office.
Here is the format to follow:
  • Name: Your full name
  • Address line 1: Parcel Collect + 10-digit APCN (e.g. Parcel Collect 1234567890)
  • Address line 2: Street address of the Post Office
  • Address line 3: Suburb, state and postal code
Do not forget to include the 10-digit APCN every time you want an Australia Post parcel delivered to your Parcel Collect address. This 10-digit number – along with your name – is how your identity is verified.

StarTrack offers secure, same-day delivery, whether you are shipping large parcels or confidential documents. If you have a StarTrack Courier service account, you can track the status of your delivery online.
