Packaging tips for shipping watches

When shipping luxury watches internationally, every sender wants to make sure that their timepieces are as protected as they could be. The first step in achieving this goal is knowing which materials to use for the task of packing watches for shipping. At Eurosender, we recommend the following materials:

  1. An original watch packaging –if you are looking for the best way to ship a watch, you certainly need the original packaging. These boxes are specifically designed for your timepiece and therefore prevent it from moving around during shipping. However, if you do not have the original box anymore, try to find a sturdy cardboard box of similar size as the original packaging and make sure you protect the timepiece well. You can buy cardboard boxes in most hardware or stationery stores. Used ones are not a bad choice as long as they are in good condition. Do not use padded envelopes or similar packaging materials as they do not offer sufficient protection.
  2. A slightly bigger cardboard box – one more box adds an extra layer of protection and therefore needs to be sturdy enough to withstand the shipping process.
  3. Bubble wrap – to protect the watch and any other items in the box. You can also use a plastic bag as the first layer of protection.
  4. Cushioning materials – you can use materials such as polystyrene chips, packing peanuts, foam or even crumpled paper and some more bubble wrap. Head to your local hardware store to get supplies.
  5. Adhesive tape and scissors – to seal the box.

Now that you have all the right packaging materials, you can proceed with packing the watch. Follow these rules and you will get a bullet-proof package that will certainly make shipping valuable watches a lot less stressful for you.

  1. Use bubble wrap to protect the watch. If you are not using the original box, make sure you wrap the timepiece in bubble wrap. You can even place it in a clean plastic bag first and then wrap it. Secure the bubble wrap with adhesive tape, but never put the tape directly on the watch itself or straps.
  2. Put the watch in its original packaging or the smaller of the two cardboard boxes. If you are using the original packaging, just package the watch in the way it was packed when you first took it out of the box. Make sure it is packed tightly and cannot move, then seal the box with adhesive tape.

If you, however, want to use an ordinary box, you have to fill it at least halfway with the cushioning material of your choice. Then place the watch in the middle of the box and add some more cushioning material. When the watch is completely surrounded with the cushioning, it should not be able to move. If it stays firmly in place when you shake the box, you did a good job, which means that you can seal the box. To make the content extra safe, wrap the box (the original or the ordinary one) in bubble wrap.

  1. Put the smaller box into the larger one. Take the larger box and cover the bottom part with cushioning material. Then place the smaller box in the middle of the larger box and add more packing peanuts, foam or polystyrene chips to prevent any movement. Shake the package again to make sure that everything is secured and nothing moves around.
  2. Seal and label the package. Use adhesive tape to seal all sides of the package. If needed, apply the shipping label.

We recommend that you always keep the original invoice for the items you are going to ship. This serves as a proof of its value and is, therefore, a document that the courier companies normally require if you start a claim procedure.

Why do our customers decide to ship a watch overseas?

Shipping luxury watches internationally can seem a bit risky if one does not choose the right courier service or take care of extra protection, but since courier service are getting better and better and packaging materials stronger, sending even more valuable timepieces away in packages is an ever more popular practice. We asked some of our satisfied customers about their reasons for shipping watches internationally.

  • Buying a watch online. If the newest model of the gorgeous automatic watch a timepiece enthusiast has been checking out online for months is not available on their home market, even shipping expensive watches overseas can sometimes not be avoided.
  • Selling the watch online. Collectors love to sell their old timepieces and get some extra money for new ones. When they cannot meet their buyers in person – either due to living far apart or due to time constraints –, shipping services such as the ones offered by Eurosender and its partners are a popular solution, not least due to their reliability and speed. Selling a watch on pages like Chrono24 or eBay has never been easier.
  • Sending watches as gifts. What could be better than getting a beautiful chronograph sent to you as a gift? A lot of those that agree with us also love to ship watches as gifts to their friends or family members who live abroad. As Eurosender offers many a piece of advice on properly packing watches for shipping, our service is perfect for those that need some extra guidance along the way.
  • Sending a watch to a repair facility. The delicate watch mechanisms need to be properly maintained and taken care of. When the time comes to do this, not every repairer out there has the tools or the knowledge for the job. Many customers even want to ship their watch overseas if the most skilled watchmakers are not to be found in their own country.
