Regulations on shipping laptops and other lithium battery-powered gadgets

Sending laptops in the mail or by courier is perfectly legal both for private individuals and for authorized resellers if the gadgets you are shipping comply with the requirements below.

Items containing attached, non-removable lithium-ion batteries, such as the newest laptop models, can be sent by all modes of transport, provided they comply with the parameters outlined in the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria:

Single-cell batteries:
No more than 2 cells, ≤ 20Wh

Multi-cell batteries:
No more than 4 cells, ≤ 100Wh

Devices with lithium batteries exceeding the above specifications cannot be transported by air but can be carried by road or travel by sea.
When shipping laptops, it is recommended not to charge the battery to more than 30%. The relevant transportation recommendations for every gadget model can be found in the manufacturer’s product information sheet.

For items shipped outside the EU or between two non-member states, a customs declaration will be required. Do not try to lower the value of imported goods, otherwise, the package may be seized by the customs officers.

FAQs about shipping laptops by post or by courier

Can you mail a laptop overseas by post or by courier?

Yes, both options are possible. If you are sending your gadget at the international level, check whether it will undergo a customs clearance procedure. If you use the Eurosender shipping platform, you will be able to get a highly competitive price for safe door-to-door delivery. Before sending your laptop overseas, carefully read our packaging instructions.

How to ship a laptop safely?

Whenever possible, ship your laptops in their original packaging, which has been tailored to protect your gadgets. Protect your laptop with enough padding to make sure it cannot move inside the package or the case. Follow our simple instructions on how to pack a laptop for shipping to make sure your item is safe for transport. Do not forget to create a back-up copy of important data on your laptop before sending it across the country or abroad.

How to ship a laptop without the original box?

Find a box of adequate size. Put the device in a laptop bag or a protective case. Fill the box with cushioning materials such as crumpled paper or packing peanuts. Alternatively, you can use a thick layer of Styrofoam padding. Put the laptop bag inside. Close and seal the box. Add a warning label saying “Fragile”.

Can I receive compensation for my laptop if anything goes wrong during transportation?

When booking a standard shipment through Eurosender, insurance coverage of up to 200€ is automatically included in the price. For extra protection, we also offer additional insurance options with higher coverage at very low rates. Always keep the original invoice of your device as it serves as proof of the laptop’s value. Please have in mind that insurance may not apply when shipping used or second-hand electronic devices.

Take into consideration these guidelines when shipping electronic devices. Nevertheless, please consider that following them does not guarantee that the courier company will transport your package without restriction.
